PeaceWork brings together stitchers at Grace Church to put their talents to work in outreach projects, and to enjoy each other's company and encourage one another in their stitching projects. Formed in 2007, the group's first project has been to create lap afghans assembled from squares knitted by members. The afghans are given to parishioners who are experiencing difficult times of illness.
As a Lenten project, PeaceWork members are joining forces with the Seaman's Church Institute to provide hand-knit caps for mariners in the Gulf Coast area. The national organization, affiliated with the Episcopal Church, is attempting to collect 4,000 hats in the 40 days of Lent.
A pattern for a watch cap is available HERE in PDF format. Other patterns are available on the SCI website HERE. Please use machine washable 4-ply yarn. When choosing colors, remember that most seafarers are men: rose, pink, lavender, and other pastels are not appropriate colors. Please do not mix yarns within the garment. For variety, you may use ombre, variegated, tweed, or flecked yarns. Red Heart yarn (no dye lot and very inexpensive) is a good choice.
PeaceWork will collect the caps and mail them together at the end of March. If you have any questions or want more information about PeaceWork, please call Sandy Goodwin at 971-0557 or e-mail her at at cigd@comcast.net.
